| Three Cougars commit to Division I schools on National Signing Day |
|
On a day when thousands of high school athletes across the nation made their official commitments to colleges and universities, three students at Tomball High School were right in the mix.
Football standouts Jordan Leslie and Matt Marfisi, along with track and field star Tyler Lee signed national letters of intent Feb. 3, each to a Division I program in front of teammates, friends and family in the school's crowded weight room. Leslie, one of the most decorated players to come out of Tomball High School in several years and an All-State performer his junior year, signed last week to play football at the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP) for head coach Mike Price's Miners. Leslie was one of the Houston Chronicle's Top 100 players in the area and led the Houston area in receptions the last two years. In 2009, Leslie caught 55 passes for 742 yards. Leslie said he decided on UTEP "a few weeks ago" after considering several other school’s programs, including Arizona, Houston, Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. "I really enjoyed meeting the coaching staff and El Paso is really nice," he added. "The Sun Bowl is a really nice stadium." Meanwhile, Marfisi will join his teammate on a Conference USA team after signing a letter of intent to play for Tulane in New Orleans. Marfisi will join head coach Bob Toledo's Green Wave team as one of 24 recruits who committed to the school. Marfisi was a three-year letterman on the Cougars as a tight end and deep snapper. He was named to the second team All-District in 13-5A in his junior and senior year. As a senior in 2009, Marfisi caught 12 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown. He chose Tulane over Rice and UTEP. Lee was among 19 high school seniors and one of only four men to join the Texas A&M track and field team this year. The A&M staff reported that Lee has cleared 6-10 twice in the high jump, placing fifth at the state 5A meet and winning the Region II-5A title.
