Girls’ hoops squads set sights on playoffs

Even though the 2009-10 girls high school basketball regular season has come to a close, things are just heating up on the hardwood.

After successful regular season campaigns, the Tomball Lady Cougars, Magnolia Lady Bulldogs and Magnolia West Lady Mustangs all have qualified for a berth in the UIL playoffs, which begin Feb. 15.

The Lady Cougars finished off a stellar season by finishing 28-5 overall and 12-2 in 13-5A, good for a tie for first place with Klein Collins, who also went 12-2. With the two tied for the top spot and the district’s No. 1 playoff seed on the line, the Lady Cougars and Lady Tigers took the court Feb. 12 to determine the district champion.

Results of that game were unavailable at press time last week.

The winner will earn the No. 1 spot and face the fourth place team from 14-5A, either New Caney or Conroe, while the loser will play the second place team from 14-5A, either Lufkin or The Woodlands. Tomball and Klein Collins split their regular season series, with each winning a game.

Tomball finished the season winning their last five games over Klein, Westfield, Klein Oak, Klein Forest and Dekaney.

Meanwhile, Magnolia West and Magnolia High Schools finished third and fourth in 18-4A, respectively. By going 9-5 in district play, the Lady Mustangs earned the district’s third seed, while the Lady Bulldogs went 7-7, good for fourth place.

Magnolia West will play the runner-up of District 17-4A, Buda Hays, while Magnolia will take on the 17-4A champion in the first round of the playoffs, Del Valle.

Dates and times for the bi-district round for the Class 4A and 5A playoffs were not announced as of press time.
