Lady Bulldog softball heads into district play

After an up-and-down non-district season, the Magnolia Lady Bulldog softball team has kicked off district play on the right foot.

After two games in 18-4A, the Lady Bulldogs are 2-0, with early wins over Waller and Willis. On March 3, Magnolia, who was ranked in the preseason top 10 of 4A teams by the Houston Chronicle, knocked off Waller, 6-1. They followed that up with a 2-0 shutout on March 9 of Willis.

But even at 2-0, the Lady Bulldogs still have a long way to go in the season. Beginning with a March 12 contest against Montgomery, Magnolia entered the full slate of the district season with no non-district games remaining.

Results of the game against Montgomery were not available as of press time last week.

While most coaches like to look at non-district as a sort of pre-season before district play begins, those same early season games often prove to be an indicator of how a team may perform later in the season.

The Lady Bulldogs went 11-7 in non-district, certainly nothing to get overly excited about. But at least a few of those losses were against 5A opponents such as Oak Ridge, Plano and Klein Oak.

Another sign the Lady Bulldogs could be one of the best among Houston area 4A squads was their performance in the Bryan-College Station Tournament, which annually draws some of the top softball programs in the state.

Between Feb. 18 and Feb. 20, Magnolia earned victories over Temple, Westwood, Midland and Conroe.

In the Klein ISD Varsity Tournament, the Lady Bulldogs went 2-2, with early losses to Klein Oak and Oak Ridge and later round victories over Klein Forest and Beaumont Westbrook.

So far this year, the Lady Bulldogs are led offensively by Reggie Harrison, who is hitting .379 and leads the team in RBI with 15. Jackie Baimbridge is hitting .327 with 14 RBI.

In the circle, Kaci Hoskins has gone 7-3 with a 1.72 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 61 innings pitched.
