| Magnolia West baseball proving to be among area’s best |
|
After a 9-4 start to the season, the Magnolia West Mustang baseball team has quickly established itself as one of the up-and-coming programs in the Houston area. Last week the Mustangs found themselves ranked No. 10 in the Houston area in class 4A by houston5abaseball.com, a respected and well-established Web site dedicated to covering high school baseball in the Houston area. The Mustangs made their mark early in the season, going 7-3 in non-district play, including deeps runs in the Cy Fair ISD Tournament, the Lamar Consolidated Tournament and the Goose Creek Memorial Invitational. The team got things off on the right foot in 2010 with a 5-1 win over 5A stalwart Bryan on Feb. 22. While a 12-3 loss to Cy Falls followed, the Mustangs went on to win five of their next six, including wins over Cy Ridge, Manvel, Terry and Cy Ranch. But with district play now underway, the Mustangs may find the going a little rougher. That became apparent after the March 9 district opener against Willis, where Magnolia West wasn’t able to keep up, falling 7-4. The Mustangs rallied in their second district contest, knocking off Caney Creek 3-0 on March 17. Magnolia West took on Brenham, the Houston area’s No. 1 ranked 4A team, on March 19. Results of that game were unavailable at press time last week. It’s appearing early on as if 18-4A will be one of the strongest districts in the area, with Brenham, Magnolia and the Mustangs all ranked in the top 10 in various polls. The Mustangs and Magnolia Bulldogs will play their first contest of the season April 1 at 7 p.m. at Magnolia High School. Among the top performers so far this year for the Mustangs has been Casey Martinez, who is hitting .636 for the season (7-for-11) with a team-high seven RBI.
